Borneo: The Island in the Clouds

On the last day of February we left New Zealand for the steamy island of Borneo on a 10-day trip through the Sultanate of Brunei and the Malaysian province of Sarawak. We visited a world of grand palaces and
 floating villages.

We visited the Brunei Museum to view artifacts such as chopppers, scapers & flakes dated to as much as 40 kya from Sarawak's Niah Cave.

We camped by and swam in the rainforest rivers, wandered through chinese temples, sweated through mangrove swamps loaded with macaque and proboscis monkeys,

and a enjoyed long, magical afternoon in a orangutan reserve.

Sarah spent the better part of one day on an extended, viciously steep and muddy track

into the remote Ulu Temburong highland with an Iban guide in search of the elusive hornbill and gibbon monkeys.

Was extremely lucky to spot a rare brown hornbill but sadly missed the gibbons (known in Malay as "wa-wa," presumably because of the sound of their pair-bond duets). Mark came nose to nose with a emerald pit viper and a pair of bearded pigs at Bako National Park. Having just returned, we're anxious to share a few photos with you--so, without further ado click here to view our highlights:

Note: The photos are high resolution so they may take a while to load (especially when viewing slideshow).
